A Hundred Stances, A Thousand Manners

In the lower right corner: James' Nagas, lower left Aaron's Crabs, upper left Stu's Clayed Phoenix, and upper right David's Phoenix.  the picture is from the second to last round.  Notice the pop and doughnuts!  Yeah Man!  You can also see my Shugenja are out of casts on several spells (stones on cards).  Yea, Yea, Yea, we have too much silver and prime, plus some paper clays.  All the felt (light green, tan, blue, and dark green) is actually the road cutting through the bogs.  the dice are actually real dice.

How the scene went: All the players seemed to enjoy it.  Everything off the road was a maneuver test and difficult terrain, so no rank or overlap advantages and the like.  At one point probably a third of the units were unformed due to missed maneuver tests.  We played with just 4 of us, so we did the spoked version below.  We changed the reward for Coot to an extra move on the Campaign Map and no VPs.  We also rolled one initiative dice for our whole army with just the Daimyo.  You could also gain another Campaign Map move by gaining the most VPs.  Overall this work out well.

James brought the Naga.  Moved through the bogs very well.  David's Phoenix handed him his regurgitated lunch in the first turn with a FireStorm attack.  Layout proximity played a huge part in this.  Usually the 24" elemental attack is not in range for a first turn attack.  James and David buddied up after this and the Naga went on to toy with the Crab.  Unfortunately the game ended as the excitement for his forces just started.  the game would have been much much different for the Naga had it been a one-on-one battle as James had planned for.  He had several 6 figure Naga units wanting to flank some nasties.

Aaron laid down a Crab force.  And rushed some cavalry towards Coot.  the cavalry diverted towards a huge clay force of Stu's, but eventually were confused by a strange series of moves by David's Avalanche.  His archers and Stu's Phoenix spells were exchanged.  Crab lead with a personality and unit immuned to scrolls and eventually enter close combat with 40ish Clays.  Removed 19 Clay Soldiers from one unit, just 1 Clay short of a victory point.  Crab defenses are astronomical.  Aaron could of enter mass combat with flanks of the flanker flanking the flanked, but choose the strategic runaway tactic.  Didn't hand anyone a VP this way.

Stu had the most unusual force: Clay Soldiers Delight.  I think someone just dreamed this up on the list serve.  the difficult terrain was a curse for this army.  Stu was eventually picked on from two sides, Crab and a fellow Phoenix.  the Clays without rank or overlap advantages were near useless.  No one met his best force lead by Isawa Tsuke on the road.  This unit failed a charge and then stuck by a Abomination to never return to formation.  On a "normal" playing field and this would of been a different story.  In one close combat it was the difference between 5 attacks and 15 attacks.  In the end Stu mentioned he never wanted to see any Clay in his army again.  Still he had the most interesting army and we're all about fun.

David also brought a Phoenix army with one goal: get to Coot.  the Avalanche guard with every movement advantage being played on it (Wind Born Speed, Ebb and Flow of Battle, Gunsen of Water, Ride Until Dawn) went and went fast.  the original strategy was to fall back and use everything else for cover, instead sent some spells to confuse the Crab cavalry and headed off for some Clay Faces.  In the end took 20+ from a single Clay unit for a single VP.  Stu's wicked dual, nearly took Shiba Tsukune to the dirt.  the Earth Dragon afraid of getting shot just barely flanked a unit on the last turn (a lot of points for just one attack).

7 turns in all of 2 1/2 hours.  An overhead picture is coming.
